The Importance of College Friends

Michelle and I in college!

One thing I’ll always be grateful for is joining activities in college — clubs, sports, anything that brings people together beyond the classroom.

I met my best friend through equestrian, and to this day it reminds me why putting yourself in those spaces matters so much. When you join a club, a sport, or even a fraternity/sorority, you’re surrounded by people who already share something with you — the same interests, passions, discipline, or lifestyle.

Those shared interests create instant connection, but more importantly, they build real friendships. You spend time together consistently, work toward common goals, support each other, and grow side by side. That’s where bonds naturally form.

College can feel overwhelming at times, especially when you’re new or far from home. Being part of something gives you community, purpose, and a sense of belonging. It makes a big place feel smaller — and a new chapter feel less intimidating.

Michelle and I now!

Years later, what stays with you isn’t just the classes you took, but the people you met along the way. Sometimes, all it takes is saying yes to joining something — and you end up meeting friends who last a lifetime.

So don’t be afraid to join something while you’re in college. This is the time to explore who you are, try new things, and put yourself out there. Say yes more often, even if it feels a little uncomfortable at first. You never know — that one club, team, or activity might lead you to friendships that shape you for life.
