Living with Hypoglycemia: What I’ve Learned (and How I Manage It)

When life gives you hypoglycemia… make fruit salad 🍓🍊🥝

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about living with hypoglycemia, it’s that your body has zero chill when it wants fuel. One minute you’re fine, the next? Dizzy, shaky, maybe even feeling like you’ve had three margaritas on an empty stomach (been there).

I’ve had my fair share of “oops, I forgot to eat” moments — and hypoglycemia is quick to remind me that skipping meals isn’t an option. Over time, I’ve figured out little tricks to manage it, stay energized, and avoid that dreaded blood sugar crash.

The Early Signs I Look Out For:

  • Feeling lightheaded or dizzy (like the floor just tilted).

  • A sudden wave of weakness or fatigue.

  • Feeling super irritable for no reason.

  • Headaches that creep in fast.

  • And my personal favorite: the “I need to eat something right now or I’ll pass out” feeling.

My Go-To Snacks & Meals:

  • Protein + carbs combo: Toast with peanut butter, Greek yogurt with granola, or a banana with almond butter.

  • Small, frequent meals: I never leave the house without a snack — usually a protein bar or mixed nuts.

  • Steady fuel, not quick fixes: I avoid refined sugars completely, even in emergencies, because they can make me crash harder.

What Helps Me Stay Balanced:

  • I start my mornings with something small — even if I’m not hungry yet — just to keep my blood sugar steady.

  • I avoid going too long without eating. For me, the 3-4 hour mark is when I start to feel it.

  • Hydration is key. Dehydration + low blood sugar? Not cute.

The Takeaway

Living with hypoglycemia isn’t about being perfect — it’s about listening to your body. I’ve learned that keeping snacks on hand, eating balanced meals, and slowing down when I feel off makes all the difference.

If you’re dealing with the same thing, know this: you’re not “high maintenance” or “overthinking it.” You’re just taking care of yourself — and that’s always a power move.

Take care of you, my sweet healthy babes.
