The Cosmopolitan: Pretty, Pink, and Always in Style
Whether or not you were a Sex and the City fan, we can probably all agree on one thing: the Cosmopolitan is a classic. It’s flirty, iconic, and still one of the chicest cocktails to sip — whether you’re out with friends or shaking things up at home.
Though it became the drink of choice for Carrie Bradshaw in the early 2000s, the Cosmo’s roots go back a bit further. Some credit the recipe to bartender Cheryl Cook in the 1980s, who wanted to create a drink that looked as good as it tasted — something “ladies could hold in a martini glass and feel sophisticated.” Mission accomplished.
What makes a Cosmo stand the test of time? It’s the perfect balance: tart from cranberry and lime, a little sweet from Cointreau, and smooth from the vodka. It’s vibrant, easy to make, and unapologetically fabulous.
Here’s how I like mine…
The Classic Cosmopolitan
1.5 oz vodka (citrus vodka if you’re feeling fancy)
1 oz Cointreau or Grand Marnier
0.5 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz cranberry juice (not too sweet!)
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass
Garnish with a twist of orange or lime
Serve it up and channel your inner NYC icon — heels optional.
