The Real Cost of Loving Animals (And Why I Believe Pet Insurance Is Worth It)

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my life revolves around animals.

Between horses and my four dogs, I wouldn’t have it any other way. They bring so much joy, companionship, and purpose to my life.

But there’s one part of being an animal owner that isn’t as glamorous: the vet bills.

Over the past few months, caring for my 13-year-old Chihuahua, Catalina, through kidney disease has been one of the biggest reminders that medical care can become incredibly expensive—and it often happens without warning.

When they’re sick, you don’t stop to think about the cost.

You just want to give them every possible chance.

Looking back, I wish I had considered pet insurance much earlier.

For any new puppy or young dog, I truly believe it’s one of the smartest investments you can make. It gives you the freedom to focus on your pet’s care instead of worrying about whether you can afford the next test, hospitalization, or medication.

Of course, every policy is different, and it’s important to read the details to understand what’s covered and what isn’t. But after everything we’ve experienced with Cata, I’ve decided I’m going to insure my younger dogs through Trupanion.

It’s one of those things you hope you’ll never need.

But if you do, you’ll be incredibly grateful it’s there.

This Week’s Gal Off Duty

Our pets give us unconditional love every single day.

Planning for their future is one of the greatest ways we can love them back.

Whether you choose Trupanion or another provider, my advice is simple: look into pet insurance while your pets are still young and healthy.

Your future self—and your pet—may thank you for it.

Why It Works

Veterinary medicine has advanced tremendously, but those advances can come with significant costs.

Insurance can help you make medical decisions based on what’s best for your pet, not just what fits your budget.

I hope I never have to use it for my younger dogs—but knowing it’s there will give me tremendous peace of mind.

Here’s to giving our furry family members the healthiest, happiest lives possible.
